Skin Cancer Awareness Month

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and an important reminder for all of us in the turf industry to protect and check our skin. Long days in the direct sun puts superintendents and crew at a higher risk, take some time this month to share some information with your team that can help prevent skin cancer or detect it early and save lives.

In terms of prevention, the American Cancer Society promotes the Slip, Slop, Slap & Wrap catch phrase:

  • Slip on a shirt.
  • Slop on sunscreen.
  • Slap on a hat.
  • Wrap on sunglasses to protect the eyes and sensitive skin around them

The majority of skin cancer is treatable, if caught early on. SpotSkinCancer.org provides some information on how to check your skin for warning signs, download the info sheet below and display in your maintenance shop. Your ITP rep will be passing these out with your Monthly TIP sheet.
